Windows 10 October 2020 Update (20H2)
As always, Microsoft is throttling the availability of the update at first to ensure there are no widespread issues when updating to the latest release. So, not everyone will get it right away. The update will first be made available to customers on supported devices running Windows 10 version 1903 or higher. It won’t be automatically installed you will need to go to Windows Update to manually install the update. Not all devices will be ready for the update until the coming weeks. “In this work, learn and connect from home environment where people are relying on their PCs more than ever before, we are taking a measured seeker-based rollout approach to the October 2020 Update. We are throttling availability over the coming weeks to ensure a reliable download experience, so the update may not be offered to you right away. Additionally, some devices might have a compatibility issue for which a safeguard hold is in place, so we will not offer the update until we are confident that you will have a good update experience,” Microsoft exec John Cable notes in his announcement.
What’s New
Note that this is not a major release and will be handled like recent feature updates that are mainly service packs. The update does include a few minor improvements and features which focus on subtle UI changes. For example, Microsoft is updating the Start menu with a cleaner look. It’s removing colors from live tiles. And accented squared from logos in the app list. It also brings more classic Control Panel settings to the modern Settings app. There is also a significant chance the way Alt+Tab works. In addition to your open windows displaying when pressing Alt+Tab it will also display open tabs you have in Microsoft Edge. But Microsoft is allowing users to switch back to how it previously worked. Microsoft is also making an addition to gaming and making it easier to switch to a higher refresh rate from Settings.
